How to post full screenshots on X and Threads

To post a full screenshot on X or Threads, place the screenshot inside a fixed-ratio canvas instead of cropping it to fill the entire image. The screenshot stays complete, while the surrounding frame gives the post a shape that is easier to compose and preview.

Why raw screenshots are awkward to post

An iPhone screenshot is usually tall. Social posts can present tall images differently across timelines, expanded views, devices, and future interface changes. Filling a shorter frame by cropping can remove text, names, or the visual payoff at the bottom of the screenshot.

Framing solves a different problem: it keeps the screenshot complete and changes the shape of the image around it.

Fit the screenshot inside the frame

The key is to scale the screenshot until all four edges are visible inside the canvas. Do not zoom it until the top or bottom disappears.

The remaining space is useful. It can separate the screenshot from the edge of the post, hold a background colour, and give you room for a short label without covering the original content.

Pick the frame that suits the screenshot

• 1:1 works well when the screenshot can stay readable at a compact size.
• 4:3 gives a portrait screenshot more height while leaving space at the sides.
• 5:3 creates a wider frame without stretching all the way to 16:9.
• 16:9 gives you the most horizontal room for a wide composition or multiple images.

There is no single ratio that every social surface will display identically. Choose the one that keeps the important content readable, then inspect the preview in X or Threads before posting.

Use the frame to improve the image

Once the screenshot fits, make the surrounding space feel deliberate:

1. Choose a background that contrasts with the screenshot.
2. Leave even spacing around the content.
3. Add rounded corners to define the screenshot’s shape.
4. Use a light border or shadow if the screenshot blends into the background.

The frame should support the screenshot, not become the main subject.

Check private details before posting

A public post can expose more than the part you meant to share. Inspect the screenshot for names, profile images, email addresses, notification previews, account details, and anything else that should stay private.

Crop information only when it is outside the part you need. When it sits inside useful content, cover it with an opaque redaction shape before export.

Preview the final post
